Being Hired Back

Emond Harnden has an excellent record of hiring its articling students into associate positions. More than one-third of the firm's partners and associates articled at the firm. And, over the years, Emond Harnden has offered employment to nearly two-thirds of its articling students. Dedicated to developing talent from within, Emond Harnden sees its articling students as the foundation for future growth. And, the future looks very positive.

Networking with Clients, Lawyers, and Professional Associations

Our practice reflects the high calibre of our clients-federal, provincial and municipal government departments, the head offices of national and international organizations, and thriving manufacturers and high-technology businesses. Visiting clients with our articling students, we take the time to understand our clients' organizations and their needs.

Developing contacts in both the private and public sectors, many of our students go on to employment with our clientele or with law firms in Ottawa and Toronto. As well, students will find the local labour law bar is small, cordial and friendly. So, too, are the individuals who have created Ottawa's vibrant chapter of the human resources professionals association.

Working in Both Official Languages

Because many of our lawyers practice law and provide services in French, articling students will have the opportunity to work in a bilingual environment. Students may choose to develop and sharpen their capacities to work in both English and French-a prospect offered by very few law firms in Ontario.

Working at Emond Harnden: Salary, Benefits, and the Office Environs

Our offices are located in the Glebe, a few minutes drive from downtown Ottawa. Though the streetcars no longer stop along Bank Street, the restaurateurs, booksellers and coffee shop owners have maintained the feel of a cozy neighbourhood originally built around welcoming pedestrian traffic.

Our salaries and benefits are reviewed yearly, ensuring they are competitive with both the Toronto and Ottawa marketplaces. For students accepted into the 2009 to 2010 articling program, Emond Harnden offers the following:

  • The total salary package paid to an articling student is $56,000. This figure includes salary paid during the Skills and Professional Responsibility Program Phase of the Bar Admission Course and throughout the ten-month Articling Phase. This figure also includes a bonus of $5,000 paid prior to the start of the Articling Phase;
  • Full tuition for the Skills and Professional Responsibility Program Phase of the Bar Admission Course and the Call to the Bar Fee;
  • Paid Parking or Bus Pass;
